Remote careers: which roles really hire remotely
Remote hiring is concentrated, not universal. It clusters in occupations whose output is digital and whose collaboration can happen in writing — software, data, design, marketing, finance operations, support and analysis. If you are choosing a career partly to work remotely, choose from that set, then optimise for what remote employers actually screen: written communication and evidence you finish things without supervision.

Which roles genuinely go remote
The test is not whether a task can be done from home for a day, but whether the whole job can run asynchronously: digital output, written handover, no physical or licensed on-site component. Occupations that pass tend to stay remote through hiring cycles; ones that only passed during the pandemic have mostly reverted.
The table below lists the highest-paid remote-friendly occupations we map, ordered by median pay. Each links to the full guide with skills, a phased plan and current openings.

What remote employers screen for
Three things beyond the technical bar. First, written communication — most of your contribution arrives as text, so a rambling application is disqualifying in a way it is not for on-site roles. Second, self-direction: evidence you have finished substantial work without someone standing over you. Third, overlap — realistic working hours against the team's core window.
Address all three explicitly in the application. A concise, well-structured cover note is itself a work sample for a remote job.
How remote pay works
Employers take one of three positions: a single global band, bands adjusted by location, or a local-market rate for the country you are in. The second is most common, which means the same title can pay very differently depending on where you sit.
Compare any posted range against the occupation's median on its role page rather than against your current salary. And check the seniority band — entry-level remote roles typically sit at 60 to 85 per cent of the median.
Getting your first remote role
Junior remote positions are scarcer because remote teams invest less in close supervision. The counter is public evidence: shipped projects, open-source contributions, freelance work, anything showing you operate unsupervised. Two solid public artefacts beat a longer CV here.
Apply at around 70 per cent skill coverage, apply widely, and use the match scores on the job board to prioritise where you are closest.

Questions people ask
- Which jobs are easiest to do remotely?
- Work whose output is digital and whose collaboration is asynchronous: software, data, design, writing, marketing, finance operations, customer support and most analyst roles. Anything requiring physical presence, licensed on-site supervision or specialist equipment is not a remote candidate.
- Do remote jobs pay less?
- Sometimes. Employers hiring globally often band pay by location, so a remote role can pay below a local one in an expensive city and well above the local market in a cheaper one. Compare the posted range against the role's median rather than assuming.
- What do remote employers screen for that others do not?
- Written communication, self-direction and the ability to work without being watched. In practice that means clear async writing, a track record of finishing things unsupervised, and comfort documenting your work.
- Can I get a first job remotely with no experience?
- It is harder — remote teams invest less in close supervision, so junior remote roles are scarcer. The workaround is evidence: a public portfolio and freelance or open-source work substitute for the supervision an employer would otherwise provide.
- Are these listings real?
- Yes. The openings shown across the site come from live job feeds and are refreshed daily; each links through to the original posting.
